Four Digital Marketing Skills You Might Not Have (but Really Need if You Run Ads)

We have good news and we have bad news. 

The bad news is that you need a specific set of marketing skills to become an expert in modern marketing, particularly paid advertising. A toolkit of these skills will help you survive in today's business environment. 

The good news is that they're not hard to master, and we're all trying to figure it out as well, so you're not alone! We've got some wonderful tips on how to master these skills. These 4 skills will help you become an advertising gunslinger in the wild west of modern marketing.

Copywriting
Even if you do not write copy every day, every marketer should know how to write a good line of copy. What is the purpose of copywriting? Marketing is inherently about selling something. The objective of copywriting is to get that click or make that sale. Other forms of writing (like creative writing, prose, etc.) may be helpful, but copywriting will elevate your marketing skills across the board.

However, it should be a general lesson, going back to the basics. E-commerce landing pages don't require perfect paragraph structure (although if you do, that's great). The basics are all you need.

Marketing funnels are the foundation of all marketing. You need to understand what makes an effective funnel, and how to create one, no matter what you sell. You are surrounded by content (and others' products) online and offline, and your customers are among them. Therefore, to succeed, you need a way to get your potential customers to buy your products. An effective funnel requires not only building skills, but also optimizing skills. A bad funnel is just as bad, and sometimes even worse than none at all. Test until you find the correct fix for a broken funnel and know how to diagnose the problem.

Budget Management
Managing your budget is going to be the most important aspect of paid advertising. You will never survive if you run out of money too quickly. The right offer, the right copy, and the right design took you many hours to create. You don't want the ad to run out of money too soon. You also don't want to overcorrect and pull your entire budget at once, only to have your ad ignored.

Setting up your ad budget properly in Facebook and Google (or your ad platform of choice) will ensure your money goes further, and you are using every dollar to its fullest. In a broader sense, you need to know how much of your marketing budget should be allocated to advertising, so that you get new leads at the right time. 

Customer Research
All of the above will mean nothing if you haven't done your customer research thoroughly. You need to know who your audience is to be able to target them, regardless of whether you are filling out your Customer Avatar Worksheet or building lookalike audiences. You need to be good at conducting research. So that you can understand what your customers need and want, you should be checking out your customers' online spaces (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) on a regular basis.

When you know the right information about your customers, you can time your offers and create ads that they must click. Providing it is a good fit. You should therefore know whom you are catering to. You will be well on your way to creating some of the best marketing you have ever done once you master these skills. In addition, you'll be able to navigate the constant changes in marketing.
